My Father's Measuring Stick
Wood and aluminum 20'w 76"h 42"d
I found my father's real measuring stick on his workbench after his funeral. I picked it up, opened it and it struck me that here was a tool my father used to measure with, and we had just finished talking about him, taking the measure of the man, so to speak.
The shape of it impressed me as very sculptural. I decided that some day I would make a large measuring stick and use the numbers on it to measure my father. Numbers are a constant through life: birth date, weight and height, scores on tests and games, salaries, times, dates, addresses sizes.
Below you can see my father's birthdate: 4-23-1922. He weighed 4 bs 12 oz. He was an only child, 1. He was married on 8/29/42.. His chiildren were born in '44, '46, '51 and '52. He lived at 8021. He was 5'9" tall and weighed 135. According to the IRS, his net worth was $1,1750,00. On the left below was his best golf score, 83, hole by hole. (He loved golf.) He died on 7-18-1999 at the age of 77. He was a fine man.
I shortened the Measuring Stick to fit in a smaller gallery space.
This is the drawing I made on my computer to help me come up with a smaller version.
